Springbreak in the Marketplace at
Preston Taylor Ministries

Tracey Carter participates in 2008 Springbreak in the Marketplace at Preston
Ministries. This is an after-school and mentoring program serving children in grades
pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade living in the Preston Taylor community. Preston
Taylor Ministries offered a marketplace mentoring opportunity for 5th - 8th grade
students over their Spring Break (March 17-21, 2008). There are currently 40 5th -
8th graders enrolled in PTM and their goal was to provide each student with a
volunteer who was willing to spend 2-4 hours showing a student his/her workplace
and teaching a little about that career.
To be a "marketplace mentor," an adult had to commit to one 2-4 hour time
period the week of March 17-21. During the 2008 Spring Break week, each student
had around 5 marketplace mentors. During the experience, it was expected that
each student complete a survey on the workplace, comment on the educational level
of the mentor, general salary for that type of career, positives and negatives about
that particular career, and obtain a better understanding of what that particular
career or setting was all about. This opportunity provided each student with a few
more positive experiences with adults, an awareness of career options, and an
appreciation for the sacrifice and work required to succeed in certain career fields.
Additionally, each student gained a sense of accomplishment and purpose-filled
Spring Break.
