Dean, Professional and Technical Studies, Jackson State Community College
The Dean of Professional and Technical Studies provides supervisory leadership for the Assistant Dean of
Professional and Technical Studies, the Assistant Dean of Nursing, and the Allied Health Program Directors. The
Dean of Professional and Technical Studies is a position responsible for the administrative leadership of the
following disciplines:  Business, Computer Information Services, Industrial Technology, Nursing, Allied Health
programs, and the division faculty and staff.  The dean provides academic and administrative leadership for the
college and reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Duties:

Leadership of divisional budget and expenditure processes
Leadership in the selection and evaluation of faculty and staff
Leadership for new program development with an emphasis on creating and maintaining programs that are
   relevant to current and future community workforce needs.        
Leadership for curriculum development
Leadership for campus SACS activities
Leadership in meeting the conditions of continuing accreditation for disciplines within the division
Coordination of the development of class schedules and teaching loads
Leadership in the interpretation of the educational philosophy of the college and the implementation of college
    and division policies and procedures
Initiation of faculty and staff meetings and communication with faculty and staff for the effective operation of the
    division
Identify staffing needs for the division under their purview
Encourage faculty and staff professional development as it relates to division/college goals and objectives
Evaluate, develop, implement, and monitor the  institutional effectiveness plans and outcomes assessments for
    the division and maintain essential records
Make faculty promotion and tenure recommendations to the Vice President for Academic Affairs
Cooperate to the fullest extent possible with the Distance Education and Outreach efforts of the college
Work with the appropriate agencies and educational institutions to articulate Associate Degree programs and
     courses among institutions
Keep the Vice President for Academic Affairs informed of significant activities within the division and serve as an
advisor to the Vice President for Academic Affairs on matters related to the administration of the division
Perform such other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Directly supervises subordinates under Dean of Professional and Technical Studies’ line of authority.  Directly
supervises Division Secretary, and student office workers as appropriate.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum five (5) years of administrative/ management experience which involved staffing/staff development,
resource allocation and budgeting.

Minimum three (3) years of experience in an occupational area.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in higher education administration; experience in community college academic administration including
familiarity with program and curriculum development and accreditation strongly preferred.

Master's degree or above in a teaching discipline within the Professional and Technical Division.

College-level teaching experience; community college teaching experience strongly preferred.

Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Banner, and the Internet.

Skills: Analytical skills required to effectively advise and assist faculty, staff, administrators and students
regarding policies, procedures, guidelines and other considerations.  Reasoning ability needed to effectively
analyze and interpret information and assist in planning.  Reasoning ability required to lead division, analyze and
interpret data and changing regulations, make decisions related to individual personnel situations and facilitate
effective communication between multiple levels of employees.

Salary: $73,000
